I remember watching the Mickey Mouse Club during my summers at my grandma’s house. I remember having the biggest crush on the mousketeer named Justin and wishing I was just as pretty as the two named Britney and Christina. Imagine my surprise a few years later that Justin was a part of ‘N Sync and the two girls became known as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
While the girls had remarkable talent, after awhile I stopped watching their videos. I was actually appalled at the way that they dressed. I am, in no means, a slender person but, I am not ashamed totally by the way I look. I just feel that I do not have to show everything that I have to make an impression on someone. Obviously, some people in the industry feel that they have to do this to get recognized as a talent.
So I am now almost thirty and the two girls are still practically wearing nothing when they perform. This is not really what appalls me anymore. They are old enough to dress that way now if they want and I am old enough to turn the TV off as I was when I was in high school. What appalls me now is the idol that my oldest daughter, who is six, looks up to. All I have to say is the name and she goes into hysterics about her. Hannah Montana.
What’s my beef with a seventeen year old Disney star? How about the fact that most of her clothing is missing when she performs as Miley Cyrus. My daughter, thank God, has not distinguished that Hannah Montana is not a real person yet and that she is really being portrayed by someone named Miley Cyrus not Miley Stuart. We have enough problems telling her that you do not lie to people. I do have a problem when I go to see what Miley is up to with her new CD and see a music video that I cannot allow my daughter to view.
I appreciate the fact that Ms. Cyrus is coming into her own as a budding young adult and that she is trying to express herself. What bugs me is that she forgets that most of her fan base is still young children that watch her daily on Disney and recognize her for that role of Hannah Montana. It would have been a better move to express herself once the show was done and kids didn’t see her as much anymore. Thank goodness we still have Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato that is still dressing and acting appropriately for young kids and young adults. Obviously these two ladies have more respect for themselves.
That is the message that we should be sending to our youth; that they should have respect for themselves. They should not worry about adult things like sex or bare midriffs. I have a hard time just shopping for my three little girls now because of all the revealing clothing the designers think is appropriate for girls. Sorry, underwear and pants should cover my daughters’ rear ends, not have half their cheeks hanging out. I guess you can call me old fashioned. If my daughters want to wear that stuff they can wait for one of two things to happen. One is to get a job and to pay for it themselves or the other is to wait until they move out of my house, because I cannot guarantee I will not say anything even if they do buy it themselves.

Unfortunately teen girls are looking at celebrities who seem to think that the less they wear the better they look. It's an uphill battle to get a teen to listen to dear old mom about fashion. The key is to keep on talking. Great hub.
Hi dhadame, being in the limelight has its advantages and disadvantages. And if a person has followers, one can choose to act with responsibility in mind or not. Tough huh? Thank you for sharing thoughts from a mom's heart. :)
Congratulations for your Hubnuggets nomination. :) This link will show you where you can vote. And invite people to vote for your hub. http://hubpages.com/_hubnuggets6/hub/Hungarian-Hub Enjoy the hubnuggets.
You know the decent role-model singers? Add Taylor Swift in there. She's decent and home-grown. In her songs, I've only heard two swear words out of all of them. How's that for good influence, especially when she makes sure her dresses cover her decently.
I think part of the reason morals are degraded is because the singers start off with one hit song and hook the kids. The following songs are never as good, but the kids are hooked and listen anyway. Morals degrade and swear words penetrate their brains. Then, they buy the CDs and are affected by those album covers. They see their artist on magazine covers and copy the styles. What's the end product? A kid you don't even RECOGNIZE.
I'm a teen myself and don't copy anyone. I have my own styles. However, I think what's happened with Miley Cyrus is appalling. She used to be up there with Taylor Swift, but down she goes. Sigh. She feels she needs to degrade herself just to get sales. Thank the Lord that Taylor has a good enough voice she doesn't have to rely on her good looks (though she's CERTAINLY not ugly by any stretch anyway!)

Many good points here. I remember when my daughter had idols with barerly nothing on, it just didnt feel right. And it still doesent! Now she is a teenager and I sometimes feel I have lost the battle, because they are constantly surrounded with the same message. But I do not allow her to go out without being at least somewhat well dressed. This is a big problem with girls. Great hub, voted up!
